How Microneedling Works
Microneedling is a non-surgical procedure that uses tiny, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin's surface. These micro-channels trigger the body's natural wound-healing response, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin — the two proteins responsible for skin's firmness, smoothness, and youthful structure.
At Calgary MediSpa, we use advanced RF (radiofrequency) microneedling combined with stem cell growth factors and cytokines for enhanced results that go beyond traditional microneedling.
1. Reduces Fine Lines and Wrinkles
By stimulating collagen production deep within the skin, microneedling visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles over time. The new collagen that forms creates a plumper, smoother skin surface — particularly effective around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.
2. Fades Acne Scars and Hyperpigmentation
Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments for acne scarring. The controlled micro-injuries break up scar tissue and promote the growth of healthy new skin cells. It is also effective at reducing post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and melasma.
3. Minimizes Pore Size
Enlarged pores are a common concern, particularly on the nose and cheeks. Microneedling stimulates collagen around the pores, which tightens and reduces their visible size. The result is a smoother, more refined skin texture.
4. Improves Skin Texture and Tone
Uneven skin texture, roughness, and dullness all respond well to microneedling. The treatment encourages cell turnover, revealing fresher, more luminous skin beneath the surface. Most patients notice a visible glow after their first session, with progressive improvement over subsequent treatments.
5. Enhances Product Absorption
The micro-channels created during treatment temporarily increase the skin's ability to absorb topical products by up to 300 percent. This is why we apply stem cell growth factors immediately after microneedling — they penetrate deeper and work more effectively than when applied to intact skin.
What to Expect
Most patients need three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart for optimal results. Downtime is minimal — mild redness similar to a light sunburn typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Results continue to improve for several months after a treatment series as new collagen matures.
